A Strange Dream

no comments

I had a rather strange dream last night. It’s strangeness is most likely due to the extreme fatigue I’ve been feeling lately from 2 weeks of extended hours at work, cedar fever, and a sprinkle of stress from us buying our first house.  I felt the need to write it down because it seemed so involved, and the imagery is still rather vivid, even though I am now awake.

So the dream starts out with the world as we know it, complete with a shot of the Earth and everything.  Then one day, the Vampires, who had been living in secrecy, decided that their armies had grown large enough that they could become the dominant species and rule the planet.  Now these were no ordinary vampires.  These guys were very aristocratic and arrogant.  They wore very ornate purple and gold plate mail armor, and they had large bat wings.  They were not playing around.  So, the vampires let loose their armies and took over the world.  They enslaved humanity and used them both for work and for food.

Then, some kind of cataclysmic event happens.  The event causes the rebirth of dinosaurs, prehistoric mammals and vegetation (I told you this was a strange dream).  The rate of growth is exponential and spreads like wildfire.  The great vampire empire, and most of civilization, is trampled under the weight of rampaging dinosaurs.  The once great empire is reduced to a few small kingdoms where the vampires huddle together to try and hold on to what’s left of their civilization.  The during the destruction of the empire, humans fled into the newly created prehistoric wilds, trading safety for freedom.

It is at this point were the dream zooms in to follow a trio of protagonists:  2 Males, 1 female.  Their names are never spoken.  They are traveling through the prehistoric jungle in search of shelter, hopefully something they can use long-term.  At some point, they run across what appears to be a giant, prehistoric gerbil with spikes.  The creature attacks them and chases them through the jungle.  They eventually lose the creature, and while attempting to figure out where they are, they discover a large human encampment.  It had been a while since they had seen any other humans, and they had never seen a human camp this large or well organized.  So after some debate, they decide to go down and introduce themselves.

They approach the front gates.  The guards, holding rifles and wearing what appeared to be blue clean-suits with tinted visors that obscured their faces, made no move to stop them.  They didn’t even acknowledge them.  No one did, really.  So they asked around until they met the leaders of the camp.  From them, they learned that this encampment was Google.  Yes, that Google.  They even had the logo.  The Google leaders told our trio to make themselves at home, as the camp was readying for a scientific experiment.  The trio indulged themselves on the luxuries of the camp:  showers and hot meals.

That evening, the trio headed down to view the experiment.  The Google leaders had set up along a path that extended from a cave and went off into the jungle.  Every few minutes, a small stampede of animals would come running from the cave, down the path, and into the jungle.  The animals were of all different types – predator and prey, mammal and reptile – all running together with the same determined look upon their faces.

Suddenly, a vampire scout dropped from the sky into the encampment.  The Google leaders told their guards to lower their weapons, for they did not want anyone needlessly hurt.  The vampire laughed and began mocking the humans and their camp.  He scolded them for thinking they could hide themselves from the power of the vampire lords.  The scout smiled as he talked about how the vampires would enslave the humans and it would be like the old days.

Then, as the vampire was boasting, another stampede of animals appeared from the cave.  Our trio of protagonists noted that these animals looked different.  Their fur/skins/scales were reddish in tone.  And the eyes, instead looking determined with purpose, looked wide-eyed and confused.  The vampire, being hungry, reached into the group of animals as it passed and plucked out a lamb.  He barred his fangs and sunk them into the neck of the lamb, sucking it dry.  He wiped his mouth dry and threw the carcass aside.  Suddenly, he began to cough.  The look on his face turned to fear as clutched his neck, unable to breathe and began foaming at the mouth.  Moments later, he collapsed dead.

The Google camp cheered!  The experiment had been a success!  Our trio of adventurers were still confused, however.  They asked the leaders what was the experiment?  The leaders explained that that the vampires, while down, were not out and would one day be strong enough to take over the world again.  However, now that the humans were free, this would be their one and only chance to defeat them.  The leaders went on to explain that deep into the cave down the path was The Source, the phenomena that caused the overgrowth of prehistoric life.  It was constantly spewing life onto the planet.  The plan, they explained, was to poison The Source and let it spread the poison across the planet.  The poison would kill all life on the Earth, robbing the vampires of their food supply, and destroying them as well.  At first, they were not sure the plan would work, however the death of the vampire scout showed that it was indeed possible.  The Google camp was over-joyed, and our trio was horrified.

And that’s when I woke up.

So I’ve noticed that many of the artist that I admire create(d) many self portraits. I figure I should follow their example. Pencil on paper. Reference photo by Tony Gaddis.

My wife recently told me how she dressed up as Hatti McDaniels for Halloween one year, and all the craziness it caused. I made this as a tribute to both women and their strength.
